Roger Draper, head of the Lawn Tennis Association, faces criticism every year that Britain fails to produce grand slam winners – but he might just have found the answer very close to home. With two of his children entered in the summer junior open competition at Tunbridge Wells Lawn Tennis Club  he watched his youngest son Jack take the honours in the U10 boys singles.

The tournament, sponsored by Tonbridge-based event managers Vous2, attracted over 350 juniors from the south east playing on grass and hard courts all week. The Under 10’s was a particularly strong group with six national players competing, including national champion Michael Mhangamiwho lost out in the final to Draper 4-0,4-0.

The Wray sisters from Bromley were set to dominate the older girls’ events with Sarah finally overcoming her younger sibling Rachel in the U16 girls singles 6-3,6-4 but Sarah’s withdrawal in the U18 event left the field clear for Rachel to take the top girls title 7-5,6-0 against local contender Emily Harris from Goudhurst.

There was a strong set of entries in the U18 boys singles competition, which was finally won in convincing style by Berkshire’s George Irwin who beat Steven Jarman from Epsom 6-2,6-2. In fact many of the boy’s finals were one-sided affairs with Enrique Vidal beating James Oni 6-1,6-1 in the U16 boys singles and Lamar Bartley succumbing to Charles Broom superior hitting power 6-4,6-1 in the U14 boys singles.
